Emerging Markets Masterclass Resources Kit
The business, economic and investment landscape of the 21st century will
be defined by the Big Rapidly Industrialising Countries, in particular
Brazil, Rusia, India and China. In the face of economic, structural and
fiscal problems in the developed world, the global emerging markets are
actively pursuing new strategies to increase domestic consumption,
invest in infrastructure and housing, and stimulate new trading
relationships. What lies ahead?
Delegates left this Emerging Markets Masterclass with a deeper
understanding of the global emerging markets and their role in
investment portfolios, and had the unique opportunity to hear and learn
from the four BRIC Ambassadors to Australia on their first joint
appearance...

The outlook for the global emerging market
economies
In this opening session, London-based CEO of
Longview Economics, Chris Watling, set the scene for
the day, by identifying the key economic trends and
themes dominating the global economy, and the role
being played by the global emerging markets. In
particular, he addressed the prospects for economic
de-coupling between developed and emerging
countries, the changing role of the US as a global
economic super-power, and the issues that will
dominate the economic scene in the future.

The four ambassadors - coming through the GFC,
and the opportunities ahead
For the first time in Australia, the four BRIC
ambassadors appeared as a group to share their
experiences, knowledge and insights into the
economic and investment prospects for their
respective countries. Each gave a short overview of
how their country has responded to the global
financial crisis, and plans ahead, as well as the
key sectors of their economy offering the best
prospects for foreign investors. They then
participated in a panel discussion, taking questions
from delegates.

The outlook and opportunities for global emerging
market equities
Over the past 12 months, global equity markets have
displayed some of the most volatile conditions ever
seen amid a perfect storm of credit contraction,
high energy prices and the collapse of domestic
demand in developed countries. Have we now seen the
bottom for global equity markets? What should we
expect from global emerging market equities

The outlook and opportunities for emerging Europe
Of all the developing regions of the world, Eastern
Europe has been one of the most savagely hit by the
global financial crisis. In particular, Russia’s
position as one of the BRICs has been questioned as
its economy and markets faltered as a result of the
global credit crunch. Will Russia resume its place
as a leading economic powerhouse alongside the other
BRICs? What other Eastern European economies and
markets are positioned for high growth?

The outlook and opportunities for emerging Asia
The emerging Asia recovery story is probably the
most relevant from an Australian investor’s
perspective. Led by China and India, Asia’s position
on the global economic stage seems assured, with
both countries representing rare prospects for GDP
growth in 2009. What are the key drivers behind
Asia’s growth story? How will this translate into
long term returns for investors? What are the risks
and challenges?

The outlook and opportunities for emerging
infrastructure
With US$22 trillion allocated for investment in
global emerging market infrastructure projects by
2020, the sector offers a wide range of
possibilities for investors. But will the emerging
markets growth story support the investment? Where
are the greatest opportunities in emerging market
infrastructure? What are the risks and challenges of
investing in infrastructure in emerging markets
compared to the developed world? We take a case
study approach to exploring these issues.
